Here are seven tips to help you:
- Make sure that you have all your stuff together before the event.
Put together a checklist of all the things that you’ll need to take with you and go through it before you travel to make sure that you have all your equipment, food and clothing. Have a few options for clothing to cover different weather conditions that you may encounter on the day.
- Have your accommodation and travel arrangements locked in before the event.
A well-planned trip to and from the event can make a big difference and will help you arrive with a minimal amount of stress. Consider the smaller details like parking and where to purchase food also.
- Have good tyres and get your bike serviced.
It’s great to ride on a clean and well-serviced bike including a clean chain, so book your bike in for a service or do it yourself. Fit a new set of tyres a week out from the event to make sure that there are no issues with them on the day. Also, before you start the event check for embedded glass in your tyres that you may have picked up on previous rides. Higher tyre pressures only work on smooth road surfaces so keep your tyre pressure around 90-100 psi for 700 x 25c tyres and 100-110 psi for 700 x 23c tyres.
- Don’t experiment or try anything new on the day.
I’ve heard horror stories of cyclists arriving at events on a brand new bike, set of wheels, cycling kit or shoes only to find that there is an issue and as a result, weren’t able to either ride well or complete the event. The same goes for trying a new nutrition strategy. Make sure that everything that you’ll be using at the event has been tested in prior rides.
- Take and wear the appropriate clothing for the conditions.
You’ll be in a mountainous area, so it may get cooler the higher you go. Take a light jacket or wind vest to help on the descents. If it’s a cold day you may also need arm and leg warmers too.
- Wear sunscreen if the predicted UV index is very high.
Even if you are targeting a faster ride, you may still be out there in the sun during the hottest part of the day. Make sure you have a small tube of sunscreen on you and apply it regularly. Long sleeve lycra arm warmers will give you additional protection from the sun as well.
- Drink regularly to avoid dehydration and consume 30-60 grams of carbohydrate per hour.
Hopefully, you’ll have been tuning your nutrition on your training rides leading up to this event, so you’ll have a nutritional plan in place. Stick with what has worked for you in your training rides. During the heat of the day, you could find that your sweat loss may exceed your water consumption. Make sure that you are on top of your hydration from the start by sipping on your drink bottle frequently. As it gets hotter increase the frequency to account for the hotter conditions.
